Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Peanut Butter Pretzel Protein Bar Review

Submitted by on February 11, 2010 – 4:07 pmNo Comment

As I said before I’ve been eating a lot more protein bars lately. Recently I reviewed the Big 100 Colossal Crispy Apple Pie protein bar by Met-Rx and was less than impressed. I decided to give them another shot and try this one.

The taste of this bar is up there with the better bars I’ve had. It doesn’t have a chalky taste and for the most part tastes like a candy bar.

The macros on it aren’t great. Most of the time you are obviously not going to get the healthiest calories in the form of a protein bar, however this is not on par with other bars out there health wise.

For Met-Rx being such a big company you would think they’d be able to develop something a bit healthier. The sodium and sugar content need to be lowered. The next thing they need to work on? The ingredient list:

Protein Blend (Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate, Casein, Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate, Egg White, L Glutamine, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Pretzels (Wheat, Flour, Salt, Vegetable Oil), Corn, Canola, Cottonseed (and/or Soybean), Sodium Bicarbonate, Yeast, Glycerin, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Partially Defatted Peanut Flour, Peanuts, Invert (Evaporated Cane Juice), Rolled Oats, Tapioca Starch, Water, Fructo Oligosaccharides, Nonfat Milk, Vitamin & Mineral Blend, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Ferric Orthophosphate, Dl- Alpha (Tocopheryl Acetate), Niacinamide, Zinc Oxide, Copper Gluconate, D Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A (As Palmitate), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Cyanocobalamin, Natural Flavor), Fructose, Sodium Caseinate, Soy Lecithin, Peanut Oil, Mono and Diglycerides, Salt, Caramel Color, Whey Protein Concentrate, Unsweetened Chocolate, Disodium Phosphate, Cream, Butter (Cream, Salt, Annatto For Color), Soybean (and/or Canola Oil), Carrageenan, Tocopherols, Sodium Citrate, Maltodextrin, Dextrose

In my opinion, this list needs (and can be) cut in half even if the taste is compromised a bit. For something you eat every now and then, it’s not too bad. For a daily bar? I wouldn’t do it. It tastes great and that’s about the only thing great about this bar.

Overall:

  • Taste: 9/10 (tastes like a candy bar)
  • Cost: 6.5/10 ($2.50-$2.99 – pricey)
  • Healthiness: 5/10 (needs to be re-worked)
