Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Crispy Apple Pie Protein Bar Review

Submitted by on February 6, 2010 – 1:32 amNo Comment

I’ve found myself eating more and more protein bars. Usually I try and limit myself to 1 or 2 a week, but it seems like I’m eating them every other day now. Anyways, I was low on calories and decided to pick this up the other night. This bar has decent macros: 400 calories, 10g of fat (6g coming from saturated fat), 47g of carbs, and 31g of protein. That’s not TOO bad. The sugar content is pretty high with 29g of sugar but it does say made with real fruit so who knows how much of that sugar content comes from that. Sodium content is average at 440mg.

Now for the taste portion – it’s “not bad”. At first I would say it doesn’t taste that great but after a few bites it quickly grows on you and becomes more enjoyable. Is it something I could eat and enjoy everyday? Probably not. Could it fight cravings for sweets? Probably.

The thing that bugs me about this bar is the ingredients. There seem to be an enormous amount of ingredients for something that is only 400 calories – and most of these ingredients most people have never heard of/aren’t great for you.

Ingredients: Soy Crisps: (Soy Protein Isolate, Tapioca Starch, Salt), Apple Layer: (Apple Puree Concentrate, Deionized Apple Juice Concentrate], Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Glycerol, Vegetable Fat, Corn Starch, Wheat Fiber, Malic Acid, Calcium Lactate, Natural Flavor), Sunflower Lecithin), Yogurt Coating: (Sugar, Palm Kernal Oil, Nonfat Dry Milk Solids, Yogurt Powder, Cultured Whey Protein in Concentrate, Cultured Skim Milk, Yogurt Culture), Soy Lecithin, Salt, Natural Flavor, Corn Syrup, Crystalline Fructose, METAMYOSIN VXP Protein Blend: (Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Dried Egg Whites, L Glutamine), Maltitol Syrup, Dried Apples, Palm Oil, Glycerin, Water, Canola Oil, Ground Cinnamon, Fructoligosaccharides, Vitamin & Mineral Blend:, Ascorbic Acid, Tricalcium Phosphate, D Gluconate, D Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamin Monohydrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Cyanocobalamin), Xanthan Gum, Dipotassium Phosphate, Wheat Germ, Peanut Flour, Almond Meal

See what I mean? My review is almost shorter than the ingredient list.

This is not a bar I would recommend you eat everyday. The taste wasn’t worth the 29grams of sugar it has. We won’t even talk all the ingredients. Re-work the ingredient list, bring down the sugar content and I’d possibly think about re-trying this one.

Overall:

  • Taste: 5/10 (nothing special)
  • Cost: 6.5/10 ($2.50-$2.99 – price point isn’t that great)
  • Healthiness: 5/10 (healthy is not a term that should be used with this bar)
